Robot Vacuums
We love vacuum cleaners, they remove the hassle of swiping the flooring and while it sounds like something from the previous century, this house appliance was only invented in the beginning of 1900s and yes, this is by the American inventor James Spangler who sold the idea to William Hoover. In modern days, there are various vacuum cleaners and the newest is robot vacuums. As the name suggests, this is a very convenient appliance that can work automatically or with less assistance.
As an adult, the idea of home automation especially when it comes to the cleaning routine becomes even more interesting. Most of us are spending their time at work or taking care of the family so sometimes it is just great to let something take care of the flooring from time to time. Our current tech makes life much more convenient and robot vacuums are getting better as well in performance which made many of them great choices for the house.
As the name suggests, a robot vacuum is a vacuum cleaner that is working based on the automation system. It is able to start cleaning and stop automatically and in some options they are also able to detect the terrain to match the vacuum’s ability in cleaning. To work automatically, they are using sensors in which, depending on the vacuum’s model they can be basic or more sophisticated. At the basic they will just allow the vacuum to move randomly and back off then move to another direction when bumping into something.
On the more sophisticated options, they can use lidar and camera which are far more capable in mapping the flooring area. Unlike a basic robot vacuum that moves randomly, they will map the flooring in the house for the first few tries and save it then used to create a more reliable cleaning pattern. Usually they are in a directional movement, like the snake games in our old phones. This way they will be more effective to not miss any spot.
Just like regular vacuums, robot vacuums also produce different levels of suction as well as a system that uses filters to trap the dust and debris. Suction power varies among products including the brushes they may have which all affects the efficacy of their cleaning ability. If you want the more versatile choice, there are also robot vacuums with a mopping function which is more like wiping than mop. They are able to remove fresh stains really well, depending on the mechanism itself.

About Shark ION and Roomba 670
For those who don’t have much mess to take care of or have mostly hard flooring in the house, a robot vacuum can be a great solution. They are not best for deep cleaning or to maintain your tall carpet but should work well to keep the surface clean from time to time. The appliance may not be cheap if you want the best performing options but there are still promising alternatives on the entry-level and at a more affordable price tag.
Most or all companies who made robot vacuums are also offering a wide range of choice based on your budget or the machine’s ability, including the Shark and Roomba. Shark regular vacuums are one of the best alternatives for the high-end options and surprisingly they are very powerful so we are interested in their robotic vacuums too. As for Roomba, we are sure most people are well-known of this brand as they are the one who popularized the appliance.
They carry some of the most interesting and capable robot vacuums but if you want the budget variant, Shark ION and Roomba 670 series are the options to go. Many people think that Roomba only has expensive robots but the 600 series are here to answer the demands of users who want both reliable and affordable robot vacuums. Shark ION on the other hand is even cheaper than 670 but carrying the same abilities and even considered very convenient for the price point.
In comparison, the Shark ION and Roomba 670 are very similar in terms of suction power and versatility as they can work on both hard and carpet floorings. Our favorite part is they actually have wireless connectivity too which is often omitted on the affordable vacuums, leaving you with only a remote or even the built in buttons such as the Roomba in our previous Shark Ion Vs Roomba. However, we recommend Ion because they are more affordable and also still reliable for typical flooring cleaning.
Shark ION and Roomba 670 Design
Now let’s see the unit but just like most robot vacuums, we do think they are very similar to what you are already familiar with. The round robot vacuums is probably peak design for this appliance but there is also the D shape vacuums which seems to be optimized for the edges. Side by side however, they are not identical because Shark is quite low for about 3 inches while Roomba is approximately 3.6 inches. The housing is similarly plastic and it seems the setup is identical.
When you flip the vacuums, the arrangement and features are not the same and the most prominent difference is probably that because Shark Ion, the NV751 especially have two rotating brushes with different lengths while Roomba only have one and all the brittles are at the same length. The paddle shaped rolling brush on the vacuum channel is also replaced with loosely packed brittles which almost look like a straw cleaner but are bigger. Because you can control them from the phone, we don’t get a remote with the purchase.
Shark ION and Roomba 670 Performance
Moving further, now is for the most important point which is how Shark ION and Roomba 670 perform in real life. Both of them are actually very reliable when it comes to hard flooring and this means they can take care of most debris or dust on your floor especially the larger one but we are not very sure about embedded dirt as this is the job for your mop. The carpet performance is good too but less effective and in comparison we do think they are about the same too.
What’s noticeably different is that the Shark will run longer, especially when you are cleaning the carpet compared to Roomba as it seems this vacuum carries a bigger battery as well. The rotating brush on the sides are useful to capture the debris around the vacuum but not as effective for edge cleaning. In addition, Roomba is also better when it comes to taking care of hair or pet fur, probably because it has a more effective brush design.
Shark ION and Roomba 670 Features
Next we also want to talk about the features that you can get from Shark ION and Roomba 670 which are about the same too. They don’t come with any remote so we are relying on the app and since the two are more on the entry-level, there is not as much to do here besides looking at the stats or reports and scheduling. We can adjust when the vacuum will clean and see the reports regarding the cleaning routine.
Since none of the two are using the more sophisticated mapping, we can’t tell them to selectively clean a specific room or an area so the only method to do selective cleaning is carrying the appliance to the room we want to work on. Additionally, there is no digital barrier too but you can buy the external barrier to prevent them from going to certain areas.
Shark ION and Roomba 670 Experience
Lastly on the experience, both Shark ION and Roomba 670 are randomly cleaning the flooring and this is prone to miss some spots. The performance is actually very good considering the two are their entry-level but we have hope to see better features on the app. Using the app is very straightforward with lots of limitations and since there is no advanced detection here, we may have to monitor the robot from time to time when they are working, especially if there are items that can get them stuck.
Shark Ion vs Roomba 670
These are good affordable robot vacuums that you can rely on. In comparison they work really well on hard flooring and low carpet but not as much on the taller soft carpet. The Roomba brush is more effective when it comes to cleaning hair or pet fur but Shark will run longer because it has a bigger battery. For the app and wireless connectivity, the Shark ION and Roomba 670 are about the same including for the voice command function.
Conclusion
You can go amazing with any of these robot vacuums but comparing the price point and ability, we will recommend Shark Ion as it is very capable while if you are having a pet like dogs or cats at home the Roomba can be more effective at handling their furs.
