We love living in a clean and well-maintained house because it is just comfortable. Vacuum cleaner is the ideal tool to help you around the house removing the dirt or dust that present on the flooring or items like furniture and curtain or stairs. They are also useful to clean the cabinet and taller surface as long as there is an extension tool that we can attach to the main vacuum. In general one vacuum is enough for the whole house.
However, in the age of home automation and how we want to be more convenient, it is understandable that vacuuming manually may be a bit tiresome for those who spend most of their time working or out of the house. This is why robot vacuums are very popular when they were first introduced in the market because the idea of cleaning the house without putting as much effort is attractive for most people. While they are still far from being perfect, this appliance is very helpful.
The reason why robot vacuums are very useful is for their automation. With a regular vacuum cleaners, we have to move or navigate the appliance manually across the flooring or surface that we want to work on but, a robot vacuum is featured with battery and sensor which makes it more independent. This sensor is what makes them able to navigate in your home or know where to come back in case they run of battery power or have some issues.
Depending on the type of robot vacuums that you have, not all will have the same sensor. The entry-level vacuums are only using basic sensor to help it move away from obstacles if bump into one. On the other hand the more advanced options such as Roborock S4 Max vs S6 Pure will be able to recognize the room or create a digital map on their own. This is more effective in the way they stay away from objects that get in their way but also design the more effective cleaning pattern.
The suction power is also very useful while not the most powerful you get from a vacuum cleaner. Because there is a small motor and small canister, there is only so much a robot vacuum can offer but, depending on the options, many of robots nowadays have a pretty good suction power including when working on carpet such as the high-end variants from Roomba or Neato. They can be quite expensive but the performance are also typically more satisfying and reliable compared to those entry-level alternatives.

About Shark ION and Roomba
Getting the best robot vacuum is convenience but when you have to match them with the budget, it can be quite confusing because they can be available in a wide range of price point. If this is your first robot vacuum, it is good to try the entry-level first to know whether they will be ideal for the home or not. It is also good to learn and get used to the appliance or how to care for them from time to time because while the appliance is automated, they will still need your help.
Most companies offer their options in a varying price range or product level and when it comes to robot vacuum, most of us must be familiar with Roomba. Yes, this is a robot from iRobot and the one who popularize the appliance but, they are also well-known to be quite expensive. Since now there are plenty to choose from, you can rely on the other manufacturer like Shark as well. Shark upright vacuums are among our favorite budget options and now their robot vacuums are also worth to purchase.
If you are on a budget, we recommend choosing some models from the Shark ION and Roomba line, especially the Roomba 600. Today we are going to pick up the ION AV751 and Roomba 614 respectively from the two. These vacuums are very affordable currently sold around $200 or so on various resellers. They are the entry-level options from these companies so overall we are getting all the basics. They should work really well for hard flooring but not as much for carpet.
What make us want to recommend getting the ION AV751 is because this vacuum is offering more in the same price range while Roomba really keeping it simple with its 600 line including the 614. But, if your main goal is only to let the robot to vacuum the flooring routinely, any of these Shark ION and Roomba vacuums will be a similarly good choice.
Shark ION and Roomba Design
Before moving further, let’s check the robots first. One of our favorite part about NV5751 is the height because it is convenient to have a low-profile robot so it can slide easier below the furniture as it is only 2.6 inch tall while the Roomba 614 is approximately 3.9 inches already. The round shape is no different from a varying amount of other robot vacuums but they are not identical as well. For example the Shark has this button layout at the top side and Roomba has it in the middle.
They are also quite different when you flip the vacuums to see their bottom setup. The prominent difference is probably because NV571 is coming with two rotating brushes on each side while Roomba 614 only have one. The rolling brush on the vacuum’s channels are also different because Roomba has this traditional brittles with a straight arrangement while Shark brush is angled. The rest of the setup are the same however with the canister at the bottom.
Shark ION and Roomba Performance
Now for the most important part, let’s see what the Shark ION and Roomba can offer starting from the suction power because this is what often decides how useful they are in the house. But, for the hard flooring, the two robots are very similar to each other and seems to work well too against the small dust or debris to the larger ones like cereals or small candies. They will be able to pick up more than 90% of the debris but lose around 30-40% of the capacity when on carpet.
The robots are smart enough to recognize the flooring so they will adjust the height of the brush to match the carpet height. The low pile carpets are quite good however but they are not as effective on small dust or heavy sand when they got embedded or stored deep into the carpet.
Shark ION and Roomba Feature
Next on the feature side, the Shark ION and Roomba are slightly different however. Since the Roomba we have today is their basic line, this unit doesn’t come with any wireless connectivity and also no remote control to navigate the vacuum around so the only way to use this vacuum is by pressing the button on top of the appliance. On the other hand, Shark ION NV751 can be controlled using the built-in button or the app because this model is Wi-Fi capable.
We also like the app because it is very intuitive and here you can see the aggregate data that is shown during the cleaning as well as typical stat like battery level to always inform you the condition of the vacuum. We can make schedules with them as well such as daily cleaning or weekly cleaning and as needed. If you also use home assistant like Alexa, we can command the robot to clean by voice as well.
Lastly we want to mention navigation on both robots but because these variants from Shark ION and Roomba are basic models, they are also very simple or only using infrared. The thing to consider is none will map the house as effectively which means these vacuums are moving randomly across the flooring, especially the ION because it bumps a lot and also not as effective when moving from one room to another so chances are you may need to help moving the vacuum manually.
Shark Ion vs Roomba
These vacuums are very useful if you want to have some convenience in the house. They work well for hard flooring and also quite good for carpet. The ION in our choice today NV751 is better because it comes with a wireless system and still affordable. Performance wise they are very similar but the Shark vacuum is very easy to use because you can command them via the app and scheduling is also possible in which the basic 614 omits lots of this automation.
You can go well with any of the two for the performance wise as they are equally reliable but, for the convenience we are going to recommend getting the Shark ION especially this AV751 because it is very convenient and also similarly affordable.
